Over the past 24 hours, Ukraine has conducted a series of deadly air strikes on targets in south-west Russia, as reported by Russian officials. The Russian emergency ministry confirms that 14 people, including two children, were killed, and dozens of others were injured in the city of Belgorod. If confirmed, this would mark one of the deadliest strikes on Russia during the war, which has persisted for nearly two years. Moscow has consistently accused Ukraine of orchestrating drone strikes in recent months, although Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for these actions. Today’s attacks follow Russian strikes on Ukraine last Friday, resulting in 39 casualties, as updated by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Cities across Ukraine, including Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, were targeted in the recent wave of attacks.”

In an uncommon but not unprecedented event, air strikes targeted Belgorod, located approximately 20 miles (32km) from the Ukraine border, with nearby Bryansk also affected. Reports indicate that a significant microelectronics factory in Bryansk was hit, resulting in claimed destruction of homes and the tragic death of a child, as asserted by Russian officials.

Sources from Ukrainian intelligence report the use of over 70 drones in a series of strikes on military targets. Kyiv, although rarely admitting to such cross-border attacks, has previously executed similar strikes with a focus more on influencing Russian citizens than military objectives.

This latest wave of strikes occurred a day after Moscow’s largest-ever aerial bombardment of Ukrainian cities. The Kremlin has announced that Vladimir Putin has been briefed on the recent attacks, highlighting an escalation in tensions between the two nations.
